Anchor Bible verse of the day
In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.”
Hebrews 8:13 (NKJV)
From our anchor verse of the day (Hebrews 8:13), we know that the previous covenant that God had with man, which required animal sacrifices for the forgiveness of sins, has become obsolete, hence a new covenant has been permanently and eternally established through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. This provides permanent forgiveness of sins for those who accept it.
This new covenant is superior to the old covenant because it is based on better promises and a better high priest, Jesus Christ.
The main theme in Hebrews 8:13
- New covenant: Reference is made to a new covenant that replaces the old covenant, which was given to Israel through Moses. The new covenant is based on better promises and was established through the blood of Jesus Christ.
Similar Bible verse to Hebrews 8:13
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)
What is a covenant?
A covenant is a legally enforceable pact or agreement between two parties, frequently containing promises or commitments on both sides.
It’s a term used in the Bible to describe the commitments and agreements that God made with His followers, including the Old Covenant with Israel and the New Covenant via the person of Jesus Christ.
Why Do Christians need a covenant with God?
Because they can only have a close, personal relationship with God through a covenant, Christians need to make a covenant with Him. The covenant lays out the guidelines for that connection as well as the expectations for each party.
God promises in this covenant to remain with His people, to cherish and care for them, and to meet their needs. Christians pledge to love and serve God, to carry out His will, and to put their complete trust in Him.
The covenant, as you can see, is a symbol of God’s constancy and love, and it provides Christians peace of mind that God won’t abandon them.
Based on Hebrews 8:13, how should believers live their lives?
As Christians, we should conduct our lives in light of the new covenant, realizing that we are no longer required to adhere to the previous customs and regulations but are instead free to live in a new manner characterized by grace and faith.
Our duty is to follow Jesus’ instructions, which are summed up in the order to love God and love others, and to put our faith in Him as our high priest and mediator.
We are ultimately commanded to live in communion with God via faith in Jesus, knowing that He has provided a pathway for us to be made right with Him and to enjoy His rich life.
Let us pray
My Father, I pray for anyone who is in need of a new covenant with You.
Help them to recognize their need for a Savior and to turn to Jesus Christ for forgiveness and salvation. Help them to live a life that is pleasing to You and to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit.
May they experience the joy and peace that comes from knowing You and may their lives be a testimony of Your grace and love.
In Jesus’ name, I pray.
Amen.
