» Friday, 13th January 2023 | I Stand In The Gap Daily Devotional | I Am The One Who Bears Witness of Myself | Daily Devotional

Yesterday’s daily devotional theme was “the word became flesh“.

I am One who bears witness of Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me.

John 8:18

Background and Context of the one who bears witness:

The Jewish leaders and the Pharisees were questioning the authority and testimony of Jesus. They didn’t understand why He was making those claims. But He insisted that His testimony of himself was true and that it is confirmed by the Father who sent him.

What the leaders didn’t know was that:

  • It also emphasized the authority of Jesus, as He is the only one who can truly testify about Himself.
  • By understanding Jesus’ testimony of himself, we can deepen our faith in him and trust in his promise of eternal life.
  • It also reminds us of the unity and relationship between Jesus and the Father.

Key Themes and Concepts:

  • Jesus is stating that He is able to testify about himself and that his testimony is true.
  • This verse also highlights Jesus’ authority and identity as the Son of God.

Personal Application about the one who bears witness:

If indeed you’re a believer, irrespective of your Christian domination you’re associated with, this verse reminds us that the testimony of Jesus is reliable and trustworthy.

  • By putting faith in him, we can be certain that we have eternal life.
  • It also encourages us to reflect on our own testimony and how we can bear witness of Jesus to others.

Answer the following questions:

  • Are you able to tell others who you really are?
  • Are you not afraid to let others know you’re a believer?
  • Does your faith as a Christian shine throughout?

These are questions every believer has to answer in the affirmative.

Reflection on our current dispensation:

As we reflect on this verse today, we should be reminded that Jesus is still alive and that his testimony is as valid and reliable today as it was when he spoke these words. We can also remember that as followers of Jesus, we are called to bear witness of him to others.

In bearing witness, does our lifestyle reflect that of the Messiah? That’s a question to ponder today.

John 8:18 is a powerful reminder of the self-witness of Jesus and the reliability of his testimony. By understanding the significance of Jesus bearing witness of himself, we can deepen our faith in him and trust in his promise of eternal life. We can also boldly claim to everyone that we are believers.

Let’s say a Prayer:

Dear Father,

Thank you for the testimony of your Son Jesus, the one who bears witness of himself. Help me to trust in his testimony and to follow him closely. Give me the courage and wisdom to bear witness of Jesus to others henceforth

As I come to you today, meditating on the truth found in John 8:18 about Jesus’ profound claim of Himself as one who bears witness of Himself, help me to do the same and not be ashamed of the Gospel.

I just want to thank you for the assurance that comes from Jesus’ testimony of himself, and the confirmation of the Father. I thank you for the clarity and authority that Jesus brings as the Son of God.

I ask that you help me to understand the depth of who Jesus is, and to trust in his testimony of himself. Help me to have confidence in his promise of eternal life and to follow him closely.

I also ask that you continue to help me bear witness of Jesus in my life, and that of my loved ones, especially my immediate family, as I share his message with others.

Father, give me the courage and wisdom to be a faithful witness of Jesus and to see the evidence of your presence in my life.

I pray this in the precious name of Jesus Christ, your Son. Amen
