“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”
James 1:5
James, a Christian leader wrote to a group of Jewish Christians who were scattered throughout the Roman Empire. In the letter, James addresses various practical issues related to living as a Christian in a difficult and hostile world. One of the directions given was for them to know the importance of seeking wisdom from God in such times. Currently, many believers face similar situations.
We are being encouraged to turn to God for wisdom when we lack it because God is generous in giving wisdom to those who ask for it. This is in consonance with Matthew 7:7 which states that “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”
Beloved, the historical context in which this verse was written was one of persecution and difficulty for Jewish Christians, who needed practical ways to deal with the enemy they faced.
Reflection on wisdom and discernment:
It is important for us also to reflect on how important it is of seeking wisdom from God by turning to Him in times of need and trusting in his wisdom and guidance. Depending on your own intuition can be catastrophic. Solomon was therefore right to have said that:
“Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.”
Today, let us lift all our decisions to Him. Whatever mountains you face can only be conquered by letting God in. Daniel also was a man of God, and a prophet who when he faced challenges in Babylon, did not confer with men, but with God. God gave him the wisdom to interpret dreams the human mind couldn’t understand. Our God is able to give you the wisdom to conquer today and forever.
Reflect on 1 Corinthians 1:19:
For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”
Prayer for wisdom and discernment:
My Father in Heaven,
I come to you seeking wisdom and discernment for the day ahead. I know that you are the source of all knowledge and understanding, and I ask that you fill me with your truth and guidance as I spend time with you.
Help me to listen to your voice and to understand your word more fully. Give me the wisdom I need to apply your truths to my life in a meaningful way.
I know that you give generously to all without reproach, and I humbly ask that you give me the wisdom I need to navigate the challenges and decisions before me today.
Help me to see things clearly and to make wise choices that honor you and serve others. Please give me the wisdom I need to navigate my circumstances with grace and clarity. Help me to see things from your perspective and to make choices that reflect your will for my life.
Father, I trust in your goodness and your leading, and I thank you for the wisdom you will provide.
In Jesus’ mighty name I pray, Amen.
